What is implantation?

Implantation is when a fertilised egg, now a ball of cells called a blastocyst, attaches to the lining of your uterus. After implantation, the developing placenta starts making hCG, the hormone that pregnancy tests detect.

When does implantation happen?

Implantation usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation. In a well-known study of natural conceptions, most pregnancies that continued had implanted 8 to 10 days after ovulation. The calculator estimates your ovulation date (14 days before your next expected period) and shows this window.

Signs of implantation

Most people notice nothing. Some have light spotting (implantation bleeding) or mild cramps. These signs are not reliable, because they can also happen before a period. A pregnancy test is the only way to know.

Frequently asked questions

hCG takes a few days to rise enough for a home test. Testing from the day your period is due gives the most reliable result.

It is usually light pink or brown spotting that lasts a few hours to a couple of days, much lighter than a period. Contact your doctor if bleeding is heavy or painful.
