How much sleep do babies need?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, supported by the AAP, recommends these totals in 24 hours, including naps:

  • 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours
  • 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours

Newborns often sleep 14 to 17 hours a day in short stretches. There is no official recommendation under 4 months because sleep patterns vary so much.

What are wake windows?

A wake window is the time a baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps. It gets longer as babies grow. The ranges in this calculator are typical, not strict rules, so use them as a starting point and watch your baby’s sleepy cues.

Safe sleep

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, for naps and at night.
  • Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the cot.
  • Share a room, but not a bed, ideally for at least the first 6 months.
  • Keep your baby away from smoke and avoid overheating.
