Development at 10 months

Your baby may cruise along furniture, clap and wave. They understand more words than they can say, and enjoy simple games.

What you might notice

  • Cruises holding on to furniture
  • Waves and claps
  • Picks up small pieces of food with finger and thumb
  • Understands simple words such as no and bye-bye
  • Points at things they want

Feeding

Offer a wide range of family foods, cut into safe, small pieces. Avoid whole nuts, whole grapes and other choking hazards.

Sleep

Two naps a day is usual. Early waking and night waking can be part of normal development. Put your baby down on their back on a firm, flat surface with nothing loose in the cot.

Your checklist this month

  • Learn infant first aid, including what to do if your baby chokes.
  • Cut round foods such as grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters.
  • Read picture books together every day.

When to get medical help

  • A temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher in a baby under 3 months
  • Breathing that is fast, noisy or hard work
  • Fewer wet nappies than usual or refusing feeds
  • Unusually sleepy, floppy or hard to wake
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
  • Repeated vomiting, or green vomit
