Development at 16 months

Your toddler is walking more steadily and may start to run. Their understanding of language is growing quickly.

What you might notice

  • Walks steadily and may start to run
  • Understands simple sentences
  • Uses several single words
  • Helps with simple tasks such as putting toys away
  • Pushes or pulls toys while walking

Feeding

Offer three meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, eating together as a family when you can. The AAP suggests about 2 to 3 cups (16 to 24 oz) of milk a day for toddlers, and no juice is needed. Keep offering new foods: it can take many tries before a child accepts one.

Sleep

Most toddlers now take one nap of 1 to 3 hours. Put your baby down on their back on a firm, flat surface with nothing loose in the cot.

Your checklist this month

  • Give simple choices, such as which of two cups.
  • Supervise closely near water, including baths.
  • Keep reading, singing and talking together.
