Development at 14 months

Your toddler is curious and busy, climbing, stacking and trying to do things for themselves.

What you might notice

  • Walks well alone
  • Climbs onto low furniture
  • Uses a few words and lots of gestures
  • Tries to use a spoon
  • Scribbles with a crayon

Feeding

Offer three meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, eating together as a family when you can. The AAP suggests about 2 to 3 cups (16 to 24 oz) of milk a day for toddlers, and no juice is needed. Keep offering new foods: it can take many tries before a child accepts one.

Sleep

One or two naps a day is normal. Toddlers can resist bedtime: calm, consistent limits help. Put your baby down on their back on a firm, flat surface with nothing loose in the cot.

Your checklist this month

  • Anchor bookcases and drawers to the wall.
  • Let your toddler practise feeding themselves.
  • Offer crayons and simple puzzles.
