Development at 22 months

Your toddler’s vocabulary keeps growing, and simple phrases are becoming more common. They may want to do everything themselves.

What you might notice

  • Uses two-word phrases more often
  • Turns pages in a book
  • Builds a small tower of blocks
  • Enjoys helping with simple jobs
  • Shows frustration when they cannot do something

Feeding

Offer three meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, eating together as a family when you can. The AAP suggests about 2 to 3 cups (16 to 24 oz) of milk a day for toddlers, and no juice is needed. Keep offering new foods: it can take many tries before a child accepts one.

Sleep

Toddlers usually need 11 to 14 hours of sleep in 24 hours, including one nap. A regular bedtime and a calm routine help.

Your checklist this month

  • Offer limited choices to reduce battles.
  • Stay calm during tantrums and keep your toddler safe.
  • Read the same favourite books again and again.
