Development at 19 months

Many toddlers start to learn new words quickly around now. They understand much more than they can say.

What you might notice

  • Learns new words each week
  • Understands simple questions
  • Kicks or rolls a ball
  • Copies words you say
  • Enjoys songs with actions

Feeding

Offer three meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, eating together as a family when you can. The AAP suggests about 2 to 3 cups (16 to 24 oz) of milk a day for toddlers, and no juice is needed. Keep offering new foods: it can take many tries before a child accepts one.

Sleep

Toddlers usually need 11 to 14 hours of sleep in 24 hours, including one nap. A regular bedtime and a calm routine help.

Your checklist this month

  • Sing songs and rhymes with actions.
  • Let your toddler help with simple tasks.
  • Keep screens to a minimum.
