Fat is starting to build up under the baby’s skin, which will help keep it warm after birth. The skeleton continues to change from soft cartilage to bone.

Your body at 17 weeks

As your uterus grows, you may feel sharp twinges low on either side of your tummy. This is often round ligament pain, caused by the ligaments stretching.

Your checklist this week

  • Move slowly when you change position to ease ligament pain.
  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes.
  • Contact your doctor if pain is severe or does not go away.

  • Bleeding from your vagina
  • Severe pain in your tummy
  • A bad headache, blurred vision or sudden swelling
  • Fluid leaking from your vagina
  • Fever, or pain when you pass urine
  • Later in pregnancy, your baby moving less than usual
