Your baby at 39 weeks

Your baby is now full term. Its brain and lungs are still maturing, which is why doctors avoid planned delivery before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason.

Your body at 39 weeks

You may feel impatient and uncomfortable. Contractions, back pain or a show can all be signs that labour is getting close.

Your checklist this week

  • Time contractions when they start: how long they last and how far apart they are.
  • Call your maternity unit when contractions are regular and strong, or as you were advised.
  • Stay in touch with your care team about any worries.
