Your baby at 23 weeks

Blood vessels are developing in the lungs to prepare them for breathing. The baby can hear louder sounds from outside the womb.

Your body at 23 weeks

You may start to feel your bump tighten now and then. These painless practice contractions are called Braxton Hicks contractions.

Your checklist this week

  • Learn the difference between Braxton Hicks and real contractions: practice contractions are usually irregular and ease when you rest or move.
  • Contact your maternity unit if tightenings become regular or painful.
  • Drink water: dehydration can make tightenings more frequent.
